The Pan American Food Festival Announces 2014 Festival Details:

Top Chefs, Tamale Competition, Liquor Tastings, Art & Fun for the Whole Family!

TORONTO, ON (July 21, 2014) – The second annual Pan American Food Festival – the only festival in the world that celebrates the best food and culture of the Western Hemisphere – returns to Toronto, August 8 to 10, 2014 at Daniels Spectrum, a vibrant new cultural hub in the heart of downtown Toronto.  This year’s festival features a roster of impressive chefs, fun food competitions and entertainment for the whole family.
Launching with a private Opening Reception on Friday, August 8, the Festival will again be entirely free to the public on Saturday August 9 and Sunday August 10, presenting food demonstrations by international chefs, kids’ activities, and a Pan American vendors market. Events will be held inside Daniels Spectrum and on the neighbouring streets, Regent Park Boulevard and St. David’s Walk, creating a large outdoor street fair for visitors to discover the delicious and diverse cuisine of the region.
“As Toronto gears up to host the Pan Am Games in 2015, the public is gaining an appetite for all things Pan American,”” says Daniel Garcia-Herreros, Festival Director. “We are thrilled to be working with Daniels Spectrum to bring to life the exciting flavours and cultures of the 41 countries of North, South and Central America and the Caribbean.”
The Festival’s Culinary Curator, Mary Luz Mejía, has put together line-up of culinary talents bringing the best of Pan American flavour to Toronto. This year’s feature chef is South Florida’s Norman Van Aken. Considered the founder of New World Cuisine, and known internationally for introducing the concept of “fusion” to the culinary world, Mr. Van Aken will present a free food demonstration. A total of twenty Pan American chefs will live demo dishes, including:
Top Chef Canada finalist Rich Francis serving the best in Canadian cuisine
Chef Selwyn Richards demonstrating the finest Jamaican Jerk Chicken
Chef Steven Gonzalez of Valdez Restaurant preparing a Colombian favourite
Urban Acorn serving Haitian Vegan Accra Fritters
And many more!
This year’s Host Country, Peru, will support the participation of renowned Peruvian chef, Roger Arakaki, from Lima, as well as generously sponsor the Festival’s Opening Reception.
New to this year’s festival is the Totalmente Tamales Competition. Mejía says, “Totalmente Tamales pits some of the cities best tamal makers for a mano a mano, friendly competition to determine whose tamal will be crowned most delicioso! Six competitors from Colombia and Chile to Venezuela and Panama take to the outdoor stage at Daniels Spectrum on Saturday August 9, 6:30-8:30pm to vie for visitors’ affections. An $8 ticket entitles guests to sample all six tamales and a voting ballot to pick their top contenders.”
As part of the Pan American Food Festival, a new exhibition of visual art titled Pan/orama will be on view at Daniels Spectrum for the month of August 2014. Curated by Francisco Alvarez, the show features diverse and colouful new works from Canada (by G ‘N S Projects), Cuba (by Alejandro Santiago), Colombia (by Abstractus) and Chile (by Rafael Yaluff).

Also new to this year’s festival will be the first annual Wine & Spirits Salon taking place on Saturday, August 9th in Ada Slaight Hall, from 7:30pm to 11pm. The Salon brings the tropical taste of Latin American beverages to Toronto. “The influence of Latin American culture is very visible in what Canadians are drinking every day: margaritas, mojitos, caipirinhas and pisco sours, not to mention Argentinean and Chilean wines”, says Garcia-Herreros. “For this year’s Wine & Spirits salon, we will feature pisco from our host country, Peru, as well as tequila, mezcal and rum from participating producers and distributors.”

The 2014 Pan American Food Festival promises fun for the whole family.  Taking place at Nelson Mandela Public School’s green playing field, children 16 and under and welcome to take part in the first ever Youth World Cup.  This eight-game tournament will take place over the course of the weekend with the final game at 3 pm on Sunday, August 10, where we will crown the Champion of the Youth World Cup.
